Jazz Band at Cygnus Creative Arts                                                                 Fred Rushmore – Band Leader/Director                                                         Wednesday Evenings   6:30-8:00PM

Objectives:     To bring the creative American Art Form of Jazz to student musicians incorporating many of the ideals and musical styles that have influenced its’ development.  The Jazz Band program will provide the students the opportunity to gain both listening and performing skills which will be useful in preparing them for the inclusion of music in their daily lives; providing for those wishing to pursue a musical career, as well as for those who want to obtain a better understanding of music for their leisure activities.

Standards:     Students who wish to participate in the “Jazz Band at Cygnus Creative Arts” should have at least two years of instrumental lessons, be competent with rhythms of sixteenth notes and be able to read rhythmic patterns in a meter(s) of 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8 time. All Woodwind, Brass, and rhythm section players (excluding drummers) should be fluent in “Band Keys” through 4 sharps and 4 flats and be capable of playing the associated scales through these common “Band Keys.”  The student will also be expected to play a Bb Concert Blues Scale and a C Concert Dorian Scale.  Drummers will be expected to demonstrate rhythmic skills in a wide variety of music styles such as: Swing, Rock, Funk, Bossa Nova, Samba and Hip-Hop.  All students will be asked to sight read at the audition.

All woodwind, brass & pitched rhythm players should have a prepared musical selection or solo piece to perform.  It may be a South Jersey solo, a piece from your private lesson or an excerpt from a school band arrangement.  Be sure it is something you play well!

Requirements:           The Band Director will only supply the music.  The students will need to bring their own music stand, instrument supplies and a pencil.  Students should also come with a binder, folder or portfolio for the music they will receive.  All Students will be issued one “set of music” for the course.   In the event that music is lost or damaged the student will be responsible for its’ replacement.   Chairs will be provided along with a Drum Set, Electric Piano w/ Amp., Bass Amp., and a limited variety of percussion instrument.  A nice set of congas would be a great addition!   All Guitar players will need their own Amplification.

Valve Trombone, B.C. Baritone), Tuba

Rhythm:   Piano (Keyboards), Bass, Guitar (Acoustic & Electric), Drums &  Auxiliary Percussion (Limited), Vibes(if you bring your own.)

Tuition:          $185.00 per 9 week semester.  Includes all music to be rehearsed, played & performed.

Further Info:  Once the Band is established and has developed a “Book” of material; performances will be secured & scheduled.  Initial performances will be local coffee houses and concerts.  It is hoped that future venues such as Parks & Festivals be can be added to the schedule.
