Auditioning actors/actresses for production of an original play by Ken Youmans about the life of John McKee, the wealthiest black man in the U.S. circa 1900. Drama focuses on events leading to his attempt to create a city, inland from Atlantic City. Modest pay. Auditions to take place in South Philadelphia, March 23 & 24 and at Cygnus Creative Arts Centre, Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Rehearsals will take place April 12–26 in South Philadelphia. Tech rehearsals and performances will take place April 27–May 11 at Cygnus in Egg Harbor Twp. Actors are responsible for their own transportation. Roles: John McKee, black, 50 or older, thin to medium build, capable of convincingly playing 90; Henry, his handyman, black, 20-30; Davis, McKee’s right hand man, black, 40 or older, heavyset; Lawrence, an investment banker, white, 25-50; Reverend Bragg, black, over 30; Abby, McKee’s daughter, 30-45. Celebrate Egg Harbor Township’s 300th Birthday with the story of Col. John McKee

Cygnus commissioned a Playwright to produce an original scripted interpretation of the extraordinary accomplishments of Col. John McKee for Egg Harbor Township’s Tercentennial Celebration in 2010. This 60 minute living historic documentary will be presented for 4 public performances as well as 30 minute assembles for grades 5-12. Presented in the first person, this production celebrates Col. John McKee, a black man, who prevailed in the predominate white society of the 19th Century. It examines the cross cultural, political and historical relevance of Col. McKee’s contributions to the development of McKee City, Egg Harbor Township and areas in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. The Opening Performance of A Gift from John McKee scheduled for Friday May 7, 2010. The play runs through Sunday May 9, 2010.
